Migration

The district is experiencing population immigration mainly from Masvingo and Mashonaland provinces.

Employment

The bulk of the population are communal farmers and informal employment remains pronounced.

Livestock

Livestock remains one of the pillar resources for our population as this provides a source of income and also draught power.

Human Animal Conflict

Wards 3,4,6,7,8,9,17 co-exist with animals, mainly elephants, buffalos & hyenas & these have nurtured a tendency of destroying crops & livestock

Densely Populated Settlement

Densely populated settlements are in wards 9,19,15,11,23. The highest concentrations of people are found in the northern communal parts of the district (wards 9) pointing to the need for resettlement.

Major Rivers

The major rivers are; Sengwa river which forms the boundary with Jiri & Sai area to the west, Sesame which stretches from Gokwe South to Gokwe North, Munyati river bordering Gokwe South to Gokwe North, Munyati river bordering Gokwe South with Sanyati. Other notable major features in the district includes the Gokwe Center gulllies, Mavhirivhi mountain.

Language

Shona dialects like Chishangwe (mainly spoken in the Njelele, Nemangwe, Sai areas), Shona (spoken in the Jiri, Masuka, Mutendi areas), Ndebele (Jahana, Ndhlalambi areas), Tonga (Mkoka area).

The Ndebele and Tonga languages command lower frequency distribution than the Shona language

Agriculture

Gokwe South weather and the soils are a conducive climate for livestock, horticulture, cropping. This is almost across the entire district. There are also opportunities in the Agricultural value chain development.

Mining

Yes there are Gold Deposits in Gokwe South along the Eastern side which boarders with Kwekwe and Sanyati. There are also Coal Deposits in Gokwe North which forms part of the Zambezi Escarpment.

Tourism

Gokwe South is also endowed with Wildlife in its parks. Chirisa Safari Area is one of the largest game reserve. The stories of Gokwe emanate from its rich Heritage Sites and rich cultural practices. Your visit to Gokwe South is incomplete until you visit the scenic views of The Bopoma Falls & Sengwa Gorge.

Educational Infrastructure

With only one vocational training institute and the Catholic University in Zimbabwe, thousands are graduating from high school each year, they are left with no option but to migrate to Kwekwe and Gweru in search of better facilities.

Gokwe South is rich in Timber from the Mafungautsi Forest. The quality of the timber makes it best for furniture manufacturing.

Gokwe South Rural District Council is a lower tier of the government which operates in their rural area. As a local authority, Gokwe South Rural District Council establishment was derived from the Rural District Councils Act Chapter (29:13) of 1988 which amalgamated District Councils & Rural Council to form Rural District Councils to enhance grassroots development. Section 8 of the RDC Act stipulates the establishment and naming of councils and division of areas into wards

Subject to section 8, whenever the President considers it desirable he may, by proclamation in the gazette, do any one or more of the following:-

(a) establish a rural district council for any district with effect from a date specified in the proclamation, which date shall be at least sixty days after the publication of the proclamation;

(b) assign a name to any council;

(c) divide a council area into any number of wards.
